Day 24 Brown Fork Gap Shelter NC on 2017 Appalachian Trail Thru-hike

Wednesday 03 May

Total Distance: 14.8km

Mountains: Cheoah Bald 5062 ft

What a magnificent view before lunch. It’s amazing really how far your legs can take you in any one day – by lunchtime! I’m really getting into this whole walking in nature thing, which is probably good as I still have a lot of it to do 😊

I’m liking it mainly cause you don’t require any special skills or qualifications, it doesn’t matter if you are faster or have any style, cause at the end of the day all you are doing is literally putting one foot in front of the other.

You can also sometimes see where you have come from or where you are going and the distance boosts your spirits. I’m heading up and over the mountain above.

More often than not it after a Shelter or Campsite you are going up hill so are treated to views before lunch. The afternoon is normally spent slugging it out to get to the next shelter.

The butterflies are everywhere and the are loads of them. They fly all around you as you’re walking it’s kinda cool.

There are huge boulders and rock formations over the hillside, however unfortunately iPhone camera does not do justice to these and are hard to capture. And I am also normally huffing and puffing most of the time so quickly take shots as I am passing by.

I don’t have a hoard of photos, most I put in my posts, but I can see all those places in my minds eye. Some people have bought their canon etc – whatever you are willing to carry.

Will be stopping at the Fontana Hilton shelter and then taking time to stop at the Fontana Dam lodge. Even though it is so close to the last day off, I only have enough food to get to Fontana and want to take a moment before heading into the genre at Smokey Mountains.
